Quilters--Pay Attention to Value

Value is a hardworking element in your quilts.

As a long-time quilter, I have attended many shows, large and small, local and international. Shows often raise funds through the sale of small, donated quilts. I purchase these quilts to use in my one hour presentation called "What Were the Judges Thinking?"

The quilt below is one of those quilts. It's a popular pattern for good reason. The composition is charming and the theme is all about sewing and quilting.

In this photo, the white head of the machine is very similar in value to the background. So similar that when I hold the quilt up in front of an audience, most people do not see the top of the sewing machine. You can see it in this photo, particularly because I'm pointing it out. But you cannot, even from even a short distance. The maker attempted to solve this problem by stitching around the white machine head with red thread, but it's not enough. Perhaps, if they had made the stitching larger, wider, more predominant. Don't forget that what works up close under your sewing machine, should also work when viewed hanging on your wall.https://courses.kathiekerler.c...
